History
The Constitution of the Oakland Mills Church Aid Society was adopted on October 7, 1915 by charter members Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall, Ann Arthur, Virginia Oldt, Melissa Lazenby, and Mrs. Ed Deal. There have been several amendments since that day. The goals of the Society are the same today as was adopted in the original constitution. The dues were 10 cents per month and today are $1.25 per year.
During World War I the members served for the Red Cross. The members sponsored a French orphan from 1918-1923. Paying $36 per year and making payments quarterly. At the same time, members also made a $36 per year donation to the Orphans Home at Council Bluffs, Iowa to be paid quarterly.
Back in 1922, the members voted to furnish a room at the County Hospital not to exceed $350. In October 1922, a barrel of fruit and vegatables were sent to the Orphans Home. The freight was 95 cents.
Over the years, members have been involved in many projects from supporting the church to needy families and organizations. In the earlier years, members met at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Members quilted, tied comforters, did handiwork or anything else that the hostess needed help on. Now, with many projects the members are involved in, the Christmas plates for the members and friends that are confined to their homes are still very special. The main projects the members have in raising money to support the church are the annual ice cream social, annual bake sales and bazaars.
Members have contributed monies from fundraisers to support the AWANA program being sponsored by the church. This is a very important program for our youth. In the past. members have sold commemorative plates, dish cloths, dish scratchers, vanilla, and note papers with pictures of the church.
Today, members and families meet for a cooperative noon luncheon on the first Thursday of the month. A devotional time and business meeting follows.
